MANHATTAN, Kan. - The University of Houston volleyball concluded its first road trip with a split on Saturday at the Kansas State Invitational.
The Cougars lost a four game decision (30-28, 26-30, 26-30, 22-30) to No. 24 Kansas State before rebounding in a night cap taking a five game marathon (30-26, 28-30, 30-28, 23-30, 15-10) over Florida State.
Against the Seminoles, Kariny Ritter slapped a career-high 23 kills on 70 swings, while Becca Sartori slapped 21 kills of her own. Justine Farmer added a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs.
Jaci Gonzalez recorded 21 digs concluding the weekend only two digs away from the 2,000 career mark. Jennifer Hohl and Kelli Adams also combined for 70 assists for the victors.
Game one was a back and forth affair featuring 12 ties and five lead changes. With FSU up 26-25, the Houston defense turned up the heat forcing four Seminole attack errors as the Cougars emerged with a 30-26 win.
The two teams split games two and three by the count of 30-28. FSU evened the match coming away with game four, 30-23.
Houston (5-5) regrouped in the fifth game once again with solid defense. A Ritter kill gave UH a two-point cushion at 7-5 before consecutive FSU attack errors streched the advantage to 9-5.
After a FSU timeout, Farmer blasted a kill making it 10-5. The Seminoles got within a pair at 11-9, but Houston closed out the match scoring four of the final five points.
Houston started the day grabbing game one from the host Wildcats, 30-28. KSU charged back putting together a 22-15 lead in game two. The Cougars responded with a 8-4 spurt to get within, 26-23. A bad set by Hohl followed by an attack error allowed KSU to even the match with a 30-26 game two victory.
The Wildcats came out of the locker room controlling games three and four registering 30-22 wins in both games.
Ritter (16 kills and 19 digs) and Farmer (15 kills and 11 digs) were able to put together double-doubles, while Hohl dished out 40 assists. Gonzalez anchored the back row with 21 digs. She was one of four Cougars to tally double-digit digs.
The Cougars head to the Palmetto State to particpate in the College of Charleston Invitational next weekend. There, UH will face the host Cougars as well as SEC foe South Carolina. First serve against the Gamecocks is slated for Friday afternoon at 4pm.
