HOUSTON, Texas - As the first week of preseason camp draws to a close, University of Houston head football coach is enjoying what he is seeing, as the Cougars finished up with their third full workout since reporting earlier in the week.
Just like the two earlier practices, the Cougars continue to sweat in the Houston summer heat, striving to improve upon last season's mark and return UH to the postseason for the second time in the last three seasons. With all 105 players working out their respective kinks, Briles believes the Cougars are definitely on track.
"All along we've liked these guys, and we've liked their attitude," said Briles. "We like their chemistry, and we like their work ethic. What we have to do is bear down and get everyone in the right spots at the right time and get them ready to win. That's why we're out here.
"We like the direction we're heading in."
The Cougars welcomed 30 new faces to the program earlier this week, ranging from junior-college transfers such as wide receiver Jeron Harvey and linebacker Kenny Atkins to freshmen offensive linemen Carl Barnett, Jerrod Butler and Matt Hart. Briles believes these newcomers have adjusted well to the Houston Football program.
"Our freshmen that we signed in February are very good guys," added Briles. "They are good people and have been here for about five weeks already. They don't have any maintenance issues with them. We've just been on the field with them for a couple of days, and they're hanging in there. They've been a little bit off balance a few times because it is all new to them. But, they'll settle down because they have talent, and we'll bring them along slowly."
Houston will take part in its annual Media Day tomorrow morning before returning to practice at 4 pm on the UH Practice Fields. Media Day is closed to the general public, but practices are open to everyone.
