HOUSTON - As the season opener closes in, the University of Houston volleyball team continues to prepare with solid practices twice a day at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
"You can sense the intensity and energy level in practice rising as the season draws closer," head coach Bill Walton said. "It's very exciting as a coach to see things starting to fall into place."
Walton has been impressed with the progress of the defense over the last week.
"Our team defense is a little ahead of where we were at this time last season," Walton said. "Our returning players look fit, and have set the tone in practice."
The Cougars return five starters from last season. Jennifer Hohl will be in charge of running the offense after splitting time at setter in 2004. The Indiana native still managed to lead Houston with 889 assists. She dished out 30 or more assists in 12 matches, including six with 40 or more.
Walton also likes how his seven talented newcomers are developing. The group is beginning to see where they can contribute to the squad right away.
"The freshmen are learning quickly," Walton said. "Juice (Justine Farmer) is looking like she may bust into the starting lineup."
Houston starts the season with the opening leg of the UH Tournament on Aug. 26 against Wichita State. The Shockers cashed in its first Missouri Valley Conference title in school history, making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
"Wichita State is a great first opponent for us," Walton said. "Playing one week earlier than in past years is a blessing for the players, and a bit of a curse for the coaches."
Walton enters 2005 just 11 wins shy of 600 career wins. First serve against the Shockers is set for 7 p.m. at the Athletics/Alumni Center. Houston will match up with in-state foes Stephen F. Austin and Texas Tech on Aug. 27.
