HOUSTON - Sophomore Anna Kiess captured the 1-meter diving championship to lead the University of Houston swimming and diving team during the third day of the 2005 Conference USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational on Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
With 299.15 points, Kiess successfully defended her diving title after taking top honors on the 1-meter board as a true freshman. Her score at the 2005 event was more than 30 points ahead of her closest competitor.
Teammate and junior captain Azul Almazan finished third with 264.15 points.
It was the first action for Kiess since Feb. 5 during a double-dual meet against Texas A&M and Miami (Fla.). At that meet, the Berlin, Germany, native struck her head on the board midway through the 3-meter diving competition and was rushed to a local hospital.
After sitting out the 3-meter diving competition on Thursday, Kiess was in top form during her return. She started the day with 295.95 points in the preliminaries to finish nearly 50 points ahead of her closest competitor and was equally dominant in the finals that evening.
The Cougars stood in fifth place with 313 points in the overall team standings with only one day remaining in the meet. Tulane and TCU were tied for team-high honors with 484 points, while East Carolina was third with 356 points. Louisville earned 347 points to stand in fourth place with Cincinnati (228 points) and Saint Louis (167 points) rounding out the field.
On the men's side, TCU finished the third day with 563 points to hold a 22-point advantage over Louisville. East Carolina was third with 442.50 points with Cincinnati (337.50) and Saint Louis (221) placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
A day after breaking a 20-year-old school record in the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Szintia Szanto earned a third-place finish in the 400-yard event with a time of 4:27.33. That time ranked seventh in school history and gave the Budapest, Hungary, native four of the top 11 times in school history in that event.
Senior captain Kristin Bay earned a similar finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.05. Her time ranked 10th in school history.
The meet wraps up Saturday, starting with the preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 1,650-yard freestyle.
The preliminaries of the men's and women's platform diving competition is slated to begin at 1 p.m. The finals will begin at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the meet are still available. Adult single-day tickets are $10, while students who present valid IDs can buy single-day tickets for $5. Tickets will be sold 90 minutes prior to the start of the meet with gates opening an hour before the meet.
