NEW ORLEANS - Freshman Jenny Hagen won two individual events and was a part of a first-place relay team to help lead the University of Houston swimming and diving team to three dual-meet wins Saturday at the UNO Lakefront Arena Aquatic Center.
Freshman Jenny Hagen, who was a member of the "White" Team took first place in the 400-yard broken individual medley and the 50-yard breaststroke and was a member of the winning 300-yard freestyle relay.
New Orleans, which is a first-year program in 2004-05, had only four swimmers eligible to compete during Saturday's meet. As a result, the UH squad was divided into 3 four-person teams to compete against the Privateers.
The Houston "Red" Team took a 28-25 win, while the "White" Team enjoyed a 34-25 win. The Cougar "Blue" Team took a 32-25 victory over the Privateers.
Because of the unique format with the teams, the meet also featured some off-events, like a 400-yard broken individual medley, biathlon and 300-yard freestyle relay.
Sophomore Szintia Szanto won the biathlon. In that competition, the Budapest, Hungary, native had to run three-quarters of a mile, swim a 500-yard freestyle and then run another three-quarters of a mile with the times for each leg combined.
Senior Vicki Blocker won the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.51, while senior captain won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 28.46. Senior captain Meagan Wien took top honors in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.54.
Hagen joined with Bay and Stacey Williams to win the 300-yard freestyle relay, and the Cougar "Red" Team relay of Wien, Nicole Vaiana, Tatjana Banjeglav and Marit Bloemer won the 500-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:48.96.
The Cougars close their 2005 regular-season schedule at 1 p.m., Saturday, as they play host to Texas A&M and Miami (Fla.) in a double-dual meet at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
The UH Swimming & Diving team will enjoy Senior Day as Bay, Wien and Vicki Blocker are honored in pre-meet ceremonies.
