HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston junior running back Anthony Evans (Pearland, Texas) today was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for his career performance in the Cougars' 35-21 win over Army on Saturday night.
After struggling through the first two games of the season with a combined 22 yards, junior running back Evans made up for his slow 2004 start by rushing for a career-high 282 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Cougars to their win over the Black Knights. His 282 yards was the first time he topped 200 yards rushing and the total tied Paul Gipson (vs. Tulsa, 11/23/68) for the second highest total in UH single-game history.
It is third highest total in Conference USA history, tying Cincinnati's Daryl Royal's 1996 output against Miami (Ohio.)
It was Evans' sixth 100-yard rushing game of his UH career. Evans also is just 367 yards away from becoming only the 10th back in UH history to rush for 2,000 yards in a career.
Memphis picked up the other two honors, as free safety Wesley Smith and kicker Steven Gostkowski were named C-USA Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.
