HOUSTON - For the third time this season the University of Houston women's volleyball team will participate in a round-robin tournament, this time taking part in the C&C Services Invitational being held in Fayetteville, Ark. at the University of Arkansas.
The invitational that takes place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18, will bring in some of the top caliber teams from across the Midwest, including No. 9 Illinois, Arkansas and Ball State. All four teams in the field will be looking to get back in the win column after suffering losses in their previous outings.
Houston is a combined 3-7 against the field, with a 0-2 record against the Fighting Illini, a 2-5 record against the Razorbacks and a 1-1 mark against the Cardinals.
Kicking off the tournament on Friday afternoon will be the No. 9 Fighting Illini (3-2) and Houston. The Cougars (1-7) are looking to snap their seven-game skid while Illinois, who upset No. 1 USC last week, is also looking to get back on the winning track after being upset by Loyola on Tuesday.
In the Friday nightcap, Houston and Arkansas (1-5) square off in the eighth meeting between the two schools, Houston won the last two meetings. The last time they met the Cougars came away with a 3-2 victory in 2001 at the Kansas State Wildcat Classic.
On the season, the Lady Razorbacks have struggled on the year, dropping their last four matches 12 games to three. That stretch includes losses to No. 22 Santa Clara (3-2) and No. 6 Washington (3-0).
Closing out the invitational on Saturday, the Cougars face Ball State (3-4) who fell last weekend to Florida A&M, No. 2 Nebraska and Maryland, whom the Cougars defeated in their season opener.
Like the rest of the field, the Cardinals will be looking for some wins after beginning the season strong with three victories but struggling since, dropping their last four matches with a 12-2 mark in games played.
All matches will have live stats provided for them by Arkansas and can be accessed through the Cougars' or Lady Razorbacks' Web Sites. The Cougars and Illinois begin play at noon on Friday.
