HOUSTON - Coming off a 0-3 finish at the UT-Arlington Tournament, the University of Houston volleyball team is looking to get back on the winning track as the team visits Rice for the first of two meetings between the two schools this season.
Tuesday's match will mark the 62nd meeting between the two teams with the Cougars leading the all-time series 53-8. The last time Houston defeated Rice was in the beginning of the 2002 season when the Cougars walked away with a 3-1 victory at the Crowne Plaza/Rice invitational.
Led by senior outside hitter Rebeca Pazo, the Owls come into the match with a 6-1 record and riding a four-match-winning streak that includes a span of nine straight games without a loss and a 12-1 record in the last four matches.
Pazo has compiled 104 kills on the season while hitting .300 and earning 4.33 kills per game. Following her up on the team is senior outside hitter Lindsey Carte who is averaging 3.78 kills per game.
For Houston, the Cougars have struggled to get back into the win column as they have dropped their last six matches and stand at 1-6 on the year.
Sophomores Kelly McAnelly and Becca Sartori lead the Cougars with 106 and 69 kills, respectively. McAnelly is turning in 3.93 throw-downs per game, while Sartori is putting down 2.56 per game and has 16 blocks on the year.
On the season, Houston is hitting .133 as a team to Rice's .250 and has 1,094 attacks to the Owls' 973.
The two teams hit the court at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at Autry Court on the campus of Rice University.
