HOUSTON, Texas - Before the 2004 preseason camp began, University of Houston head coach Art Briles wanted to see his team get better with each workout and each practice. After Thursday's effort, Briles is getting what he asked for. One day removed from a rain-shortened afternoon practice, the Cougars returned to practice today and didn't let their coach down. "We had a good workout," commented Briles after the afternoon practice. "I tell you what, we were a little bit flat yesterday, but the guys came out with a little more intensity today (with) some emotion. I really respect them for that. "We've had good working week. We've been out in pads everyday, and so I'm proud of the way they came out and got after it today, and we need to finish up strong tomorrow." One area of the team that has really impressed Briles is the special teams. Even though he has lost both his punter and his two primary returners, Briles still has decorated senior kicker Dustin Bell, senior holder J.J. Wyatt, senior long snapper Thomas Gafford and a slew of hard-charging special teamers to work around. "(Special teams) are looking really strong," added Briles. "We're covering up some areas that we felt like we needed help in, which is punt return and punt team and punter, so those things are falling into place. By the time Rice rolls around, we'll be set and ready." With the first day of school on the horizon, Houston will continue with its workouts tomorrow. Beginning Sunday, the Cougars will be in regular game week mode as it prepares for its Administaff Bayou Bucket clash with the Owls on Sunday, September 5. --- www.UHcougars.com ---
