HOUSTON - University of Houston golfer Zach Mowbray was chosen on Monday to compete at the NCAA Central Regional on May 20-22.
Mowbray was one of six individuals invited to compete at the Regional at Birck Boilermaker Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind. A year ago, Cougar golfer Brett Callas advanced to the NCAA Championships after becoming just the second golfer in school history to win the NCAA Central Regional individual championship.
It marked the 16th consecutive year that at least one Cougar golfer qualified for the NCAA postseason but will be Mowbray's first postseason appearance.
A sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., Mowbray emerged as the Cougars' most consistent performer throughout the 2003-04 season. He led all UH linksters with a 73.2 scoring average, nearly a full stroke better than his closest competitor, and led the Cougars in each of their last five tournaments.
In his last tournament, he fired a three-day score of 219 to tie for seventh at the Conference USA Championships. That equaled his best career finish at the Border Olympics on April 2-3.
Mowbray and his Cougar teammates return to action this weekend as they wrap up the regular season at The Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla. The 36-hole tournament begins Saturday and runs through Sunday.
