HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore Azul Almazan was honored Tuesday as the Conference USA Diver of the Year.
The Mexico City, Mexico, native received the honor after winning the 3-meter crown at the C-USA Championship. She also notched a pair of top-10 finishes at the 2004 NCAA Championships, garnering a seventh-place showing on the 3-meter board and placing eighth on the 10-meter platform.
In 2003-04, Almazan was a four-time C-USA Diver of the Week honoree while recording the league's best marks on the 3-meter and platform events in dual-meet action.
East Carolina's Diane Parker was named C-USA Swimmer of the Year.
The recipients were selected by a vote of the C-USA swimming and diving head coaches.
Other individual awards were previously announced at the C-USA Championship in late February. Freshman Anna Kiess was named the Freshman Diver of the Year and, for the third consecutive year, UH diving head coach Jane Figueiredo was named C-USA Diving Coach of the Year.
Her Cougar divers have swept all three diving events at each of the first three C-USA Championships.
TCU's Richard Sybesma was named C-USA Swimming Coach of the Year, while Tulane's Linda McEachrane earned the conference's Swimmer of the Year.
