HOUSTON, Texas - Senior Lindsay Durham's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning scored the go ahead run, and senior pitcher Jenny Johnson slammed the door on the potent Sooner bats, as the University of Houston defeated Oklahoma, 2-1, in the second game of a doubleheader this afternoon. The win over the #5 Sooners was the highest ranked opponent the Cougars have defeated in their four-year history, eclipsing last season's 3-1 defeat of #8 LSU in Baton Rouge.
By salvaging the finale of the three-game series, the Cougars improve to 19-8 on the season, while Oklahoma falls to 18-5-1.
In game two the Cougars took the early lead by scoring one in the second inning. With two outs sophomore Brooke Johnson singled up the middle, later moving to second on a single to left field by Durham. An error by OU shortstop Norrelle Dickson on junior Kim Nesloney's line drive loaded the bases for the Cougars. Johnson scored on a wild pitch by Oklahoma starter Nicole Denes (13-5).
OU countered in the top of third to tie the score at 1-1. Just like the Cougars in the previous inning, the Sooners started their rally with two outs. Houston starter Carla Kennimer retired the first two Oklahoma batters before Christina Enea laced a double into the left-center gap. Enea scored on Heather Scaglione's single to center field. Jenny Johnson (7-4) relieved Kennimer and retired Jamie Fox on an infield pop up.
In the fourth inning both Jaci Gonzalez and Brooke Johnson reached base on a walk and error, respectively, with Gonzalez reaching third on the errant throw by OU catcher Scaglione. Durham lofted a fly ball down the left field line into foul territory, but it was deep enough to score Gonzalez with the go-ahead run.
Jenny Johnson worked the final 4.1 innings in relief of Kennimer to earn her seventh win of the season. She held the Sooners hitless in her stint.
n the first game the Cougars fell to Oklahoma by an identical score from the nightcap, 2-1. Thanks in part to four Houston errors, the Sooners were able to tally to unearned runs in both the first and second innings, even though UH pitcher Crystal Briscoe pitched 6.1 innings before being relieved by Jenny Johnson in the seventh inning. Briscoe (5-2) struck out eight while allowing just four hits in taking the hard-fought loss.
The Cougars only run came in the second inning when catcher Arelis Ferreris hit her fourth home run of the season. The blast was her record 34th in a Houston uniform.
Houston returns to the road for the first time since February 18, when the Cougars travel to San Marcos on March 9, to face Texas State in a doubleheader. UH then faces UTSA in San Antonio on March 10, in another doubleheader.
The 19-8 start is the best start in the Cougars' four-year history.
