SAN MARCOS, Texas - A three-run explosion in the eighth inning, including a two-run home run by Kristen Glowacz, led the Cougars to a 5-2 win over Texas State in the first game of a doubleheader. The Cougars rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to pick up a key road win.
With Kim Nesloney on third base, Glowacz hit a line-drive homerun over the leftfield wall to give UH a 4-2 lead. Houston scratched out their fifth run on a double down the left field line by Michelle Keith. Keith was three-for-four in game one.
With the win Houston improved to 20-8 on the season, while Texas State falls to 19-6. The Bobcats struck for two runs in the first inning and chased Jamie Falco in the process. Texas State leadoff hitter Kristen Zaleski led off the first with a shot to center field that UH's Kim Nesloney dove for and missed, allowing Zaleski to reach third standing up. Jennelle Wolter sent a Falco offering up the middle to score Zaleski, and then Rachael Bonetti walked to put runners at first and second.
Hannah Snow sacrificed the runners over, and then Falco plunked Ashley Wilson to load the bases. As his her 2004 niche, Jenny Johnson came in from the pen to relieve Falco and coaxed a fielder's choice groundout by Katie Ann Trahan; however, Cougar catcher Arelis Ferreris dropped the throw from shortstop Jaci Gonzalez, allowing Wolter to score. Johnson escaped further damage with a strikeout and ground out to end the inning.
Houston tied it up in the top of the sixth, thanks in part to the long ball. With out Jenilee Skender blooped a single over the shortstop and was pinch run for by Jenny Baker. Ferreris atoned for her earlier miscue by sending the first pitch from Nicole Neuerburg over the left field wall for her fifth home run of the season, tying the score at two-all.
Johnson pitched 7.2 innings of relief to improve to 8-4 on the year. Johnson allowed five hits and struck out nine without walking a Bobcat batter.
