Almazan Finishes Seventh on 3-Meter Springboard at NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - University of Houston diver Azul Almazan finished seventh on the 3-meter springboard Friday during the second day of the NCAA Championships, hosted by Texas A&M at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
Almazan joined freshman Anna Kiess in earning 26 points for the Cougar program. UH stood in a tie for 26th place after the second day with a total of 26 points.
Almazan, who is competing in her second NCAA Championships as a sophomore, earned 505.25 points to stand in fourth place after the preliminaries. During Friday night's finals, the Mexico City, Mexico, native recorded 510.85 points for her final standing.
Kiess finished in 13th place after scoring 483.35 points in the preliminaries.
Alabama's Lane Bassham captured the 3-meter championship with 557.75 points in the finals.
Both divers close out the meet at 1 p.m., Saturday with the platform event. The Cougar duo qualified for the NCAA Championships with solid performances at last weekend's NCAA Zone D Diving meet, held at UH's own Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
