COLLEGE STATION, Texas - University of Houston divers Anna Kiess and Azul Almazan began competition at the 2004 NCAA Championships on the 1-meter springboard Thursday at the Student Recreation Center in College Station, Texas.
Kiess, the 2004 Conference USA Freshman Diver of the Year, led the way with 241.10 points to finish in 28th place during the preliminaries. Almazan, who was named the 2004 C-USA Diver of the Meet, finished in 31st place with 239.05 points.
This marked the second consecutive season that Almazan competed at the NCAA's top swimming and diving meet. Kiess, a native of Berlin, Germany, competed at the meet for the first time during her first collegiate season.
South Carolina's Allison Brennan won the 1-meter event after scoring 307.20 points in the finals. Alabama's Lane Bassham grabbed the lead with 308.40 after the preliminaries but finished a close second in the finals with 305.85 points.
Kiess and Almazan return to action at 1 p.m., Friday with the 3-meter springboard event. The Cougar duo qualified for the NCAA Championships with solid performances at last weekend's NCAA Zone D Diving meet, held at UH's own Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
