Swimming and Diving in Third Place at C-USA Meet

HOUSTON - For the second consecutive night, the University of Houston diving program dominated on Friday at the 2004 Conference USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
A day after placing 1-2 on the 3-meter springboard, freshmen Anna Kiess and sophomore Azul Almazan equaled that feat on the 1-meter board. However, the order was reversed on Friday.
With 282.70 points in the finals, Kiess captured the 1-meter diving championship. The Berlin, Germany, native posted the highest score of the day in the preliminaries with 290.35 points.
Almazan, who won the 3-meter diving championship on Thursday, placed second on the 1-meter board with 280.25 points.
Both divers figure to be important participants in the platform competiiton on Saturday.
Although the Cougars dropped one spot in the overall team standings, UH was a very close third with 373 points. TCU maintained its hold on the team lead with 536 points with East Carolina in second with 398 points.
Cincinnati (340), Tulane (314), Louisville (245) and Saint Louis (190) rounded out the team leaders.
On the swimming side, Haley Menard earned the Cougars' highest individual showing with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. She shaved more than two seconds off her time in the preliminaries with a 1:52.48 clocking in the finals.
The meet concludes Saturday at the CRWC Natatorium. Swimming preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the platform diving preliminaries to start around 1 p.m. At 6 p.m, the swimming final will begin with the platform diving finals to be held toward the end of the evening.
On the men's side, TCU held onto its lead with 605 points. East Carolina (501), Louisville (438.50), Cincinnati (316.50) and Saint Louis (242) rounded out the men's field.
