HOUSTON - University of Houston senior Kristin Bay and junior Azul Almazan were honored Wednesday as the Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for their recent performances.
It was the first ever C-USA weekly award for Bay and Almazan's sixth career honor. It also was the second time this season that the Cougars claimed the awards in the same week. Sophomores Anna Kiess and Szintia Szanto were recognized on Oct. 28.
Bay helped lead the Cougar Swimming team to a second-place finish at UH's own Cougar Invitational last weekend at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium. She won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.14, the 11th-fastest time in school history.
A native of Tyler, Texas, Bay became only the sixth swimmer in school history to break the 24-second milestone with a clocking of 23.98 in the 50-yard freestyle and set a pool record for any Cougar swimmer in that event.
She helped lead the 200-yard medley relay team to a second-place finish and guided the 400-yard medley relay team to a time of 3:56.36, the eighth-fastest time in school history. Leading off with the backstroke, Bay posted a split time of 57.81 for 100-yards, the seventh-fastest time in UH history.
Almazan won the platform competition at the Texas A&M Invitational with 430.55 points to finish nearly 15 points ahead of her closest competitor. Earlier at that meet, she posted 487.50 points on the 3-meter springboard to finish second in the preliminaries.
Bay, Almazan and their Cougar teammates return to action on Dec. 2, at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships in San Antonio, Texas. From there, the team will head north to Lawrence, Kan. to meet Kansas and Harvard in a dual meet Dec. 3-4.
