Cougar volleyball falls to Texas A&M

Despite 24 kills from Kelly McAnelly and a second consecutive double-double performance by Cinthia Piva, the University if Houston volleyball team was beaten in four games (30-27, 30-26, 20-30, 30-26) by Texas A&M University Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Aggies and the Cougars battled closely during games one and two of the match, but A&M was able to come out on top in both games with hitting percentages of .320 and .413. Houston found a rhythm in game two as well, hitting .357 for the game with only three errors.
McAnelly led the way for Houston in the first two games, entering the break with 11 kills while Loure Dews added eight.
In game three Houston came out on fire picking up six kills from McAnelly. The Cougars took advantage of 13 errors by the Aggies and coasted to a 30-20 win.
With momentum from the game three win, Houston jumped out to a six point lead midway through game four and appeared to be set to send the match to a fifth game. The Aggies however fought back from a 21-15 hole to take the game 30-26.
A&M finished with five players with double digit kills. Melissa Munsch led the Aggies with 19, Laura Jones and Kendra Felder added 14 each, Carol Price had 13 and Beth Skypala had 10.
For Houston, McAnelly finished with a game high 24 kills while Piva finished the match with 11 kills and 16 digs. Loure Dews added 14 kills for the Cougars with one solo block and six block assists. Setters Mirela Vasconcellos and Lauren Grover had 24 assists apiece while Rachel Harrell had 16 digs.
The Cougars are now 3-9 for the season while the Aggies improve to 8-3. Houston will be in action again Tuesday night when they travel to Beaumont to take on the Lamar Lady Cardinals at 7 p.m.
