HOUSTON, Texas - With their sights set on returning a conference championship to Houston, the 2003 Cougars hit the field for the first time this fall, practicing for over two hours this afternoon. Despite a heat index that hovered around 104 degrees, UH head coach Art Briles ran his squad through a very spirited practice, as both newcomers and veterans mixed it up on Day One of the Cougars' Return To Glory.
With this date circled on his calendar for quite some time, it is no wonder Briles was proud when his team came onto the practice fields for the first time determined to put Houston back on the Division I-A map.
"We are out to earn respect," commented Briles. "That is what we want to do...earn respect. We want to let people know we're serious about winning football games. We've got guys who are hungry to win.
"So, complacency is not a problem around here. We're going to jump in there with both feet and expect to win and work hard at doing it. I really feel good about the personality of our football team. We have guys who are really dedicated and focused and serious about making things happen at UH."
The Cougars return to the practice fields again on Thursday afternoon at 4 pm. Houston will practice once a day through Sunday, with traditional two-a-days beginning on Monday, August 11.
