HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston head football coach Art Briles ran his squad through a one-hour-plus scrimmage on Friday afternoon, and even though it will be the only head-on-head workout for the Cougars this preseason, Briles is pleased with his team's effort.
"Happy and healthy," said Briles, "that is what I was really concerned with. We wanted to low-key it, and I think we did low-key it. I think the defense flew around a bit. I thought the offense did a few good things.
"Everybody got in, so all the mamas are happy. Now, we'll take it from there."
As mentioned the entire Cougar squad saw action during the scrimmage, with the number-one offense facing the defensive scout team, and vice-versa for the defense. With both sophomore Blade Bassler and true freshman Kevin Kolb sharing quarterback duties, the number-one offense did produce three touchdowns, including two rushing scores by sophomore running back Anthony Evans. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Leonard Gibson scored the other first-team offense touchdown, a 10-yard reverse late in the scrimmage.
True freshman running back Anthony Alridge excited the Cougar faithful in attendance, breaking off a 68-yard touchdown with the number-three offense facing off against is reciprocal counterpart. Senior wide receiver Brandon Middleton had the longest reception of the scrimmage, hauling in a 42-yard bomb from Bassler, while junior running back Bobby Tillman broke off the longest rush with a 31-yard scamper.
Defensively, the Cougar defensive line posted several tackles for losses and sacks, with senior Farouk Adelekan, juniors Lance Everson and Kendrick Goss and true freshman Carlos Garces racking up sacks.
The Cougars will return the practice field for one workout tomorrow morning, hitting the fields for an 11:30 am workout. After taking their first day off of camp on Sunday, the Cougars return to two-a-days at 10 am on Monday morning. Starting with Monday's practice, Cougar workouts will be closed to the public.
