TAMPA, Fla. - Brett Callas fired a 1-under-par 70 to help lead the University of Houston golf team to a fourth-place standing after the first day of the 2003 Conference USA Championships on Monday.
Callas, who became only the 11th player in school history to shoot 65 or better in his last tournament, endured a 37 on the first nine holes before regrouping and shooting 66 on the back nine. He stood in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard with TCU's Adam Meyer and Charlotte's John Samaha.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 289 in the opening round to stand only four strokes behind Charlotte. UAB and TCU tied for second after the first day at 4-over-par 288.
The 54-hole tournament continues at 7 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday on the par-71, 7,083-yard course at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Tampa.
Individually, the Cougars boasted of three players in the Top 20 after day one. In addition to Callas, senior John Wine tied for 11th at 1-over-par 72, while Denton Walker was in a tie for 18th place at 2-over-par 73.
Other Cougars competing were Daniel Angenscheidt (t-29th, 74) and Zach Mowbray (t-54th, 78).
South Florida (290), Southern Miss (292), Memphis (295), East Carolina (297), Tulane (297), Louisville (298) and Marquette (298) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Charlotte's Russell Killough and Clark Brown of UAB tied for first after the first day with a 3-under-par 68. Both players shot 33 on the front nine and a 35 in the final nine holes.
