Softball Splits C-USA Doubleheader With East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The University of Houston softball team split a Conference USA doubleheader with East Carolina Friday afternoon, losing 8-1 and winning 3-2 at the ECU Softball Field. As a team, the Cougars (30-18, 12-5 C-USA) posted 18 hits but committed six errors on the day.
With two outs, sophomore third baseman Kristen Glowacz led off the Cougars with a triple and was brought around to score by Arelis Ferreris on a single to center field.
Houston held on to 1-0 lead in game one until East Carolina tied the contest in the bottom of the third inning. Lead-off batter Lacassa Hill reach on a error and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by freshman Christine Sheridan to put the Pirates on the board.
The fifth and sixth innings proved to be disastrous for the Cougars, who committed three errors and left five on base. Laura Brickhouse walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and eventually scored on a Houston error before Kate Manuse hit a two-run shot off Jamie Falco to give East Carolina a 4-1 lead.
East Carolina went through its entire batting order in the bottom of the sixth inning, adding two hits and four runs as Falco walked two and the Cougar defense committed two errors. The Pirates prevailed 8-1 in their second C-USA win of the season.
Junior pitcher Jamie Falco (11-8) gave up seven hits but picked up only one earned run in her 23rd appearance of 2003.
Houston retaliated in game two with three hits and two runs in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Jenilee Skender led off the second with a double and was driven in by Michelle Keith's single. Freshman Brooke Johnson followed with a single of her own to score Keith and put another run on the board.
Sheridan singled to center field and scored on a Manuse double in the bottom of the fourth to bring the Pirates within one, 2-1. Hill tied the game with a solo homerun to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning but Jenny Johnson held off the next three batters the teams went to the top of the seventh tied 2-2.
With two outs, Glowacz blasted a solo homerun to give Houston the 3-2 advantage in the top of the seven inning. The Cougar defense held on in the bottom of the inning to pick up their 30th win of the season.
Jenny Johnson (10-6) allowed five hits and struck out five to pick up her tenth win of the year.
Houston will wrap up the C-USA series against East Carolina Saturday at 11 a.m. CST.
