Cougar Bats Too Much For Pirates

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The University of Houston softball team defeated East Carolina 10-2 Saturday to wrap up a Conference USA series in Greenville, N.C. With the win, the Cougars improve to 31-18 overall and 13-5 in league standings.
With two outs, Lacassa Hill put the Pirates on the board in the third inning with a solo shot off freshman pitcher Crystal Briscoe. Junior Jenny Johnson relieved Briscoe two batters later to hold the Pirates to the one run.
Johnson held the Pirates scoreless and struck out three to lead the Cougars through the fourth inning down one, 1-0. Houston retaliated in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits to take a 5-1 lead.
Kim Nesloney led off the fifth with a double to center field. Three batters later, Jeanie Davis walked to load the bases for leadoff hitter Jaci Gonzalez. Gonzalez drove in Michelle Keith and Brooke Johnson with a single up the middle to give Houston its first runs of the day.
Amber King, Kristen Glowacz, and Arelis Ferreris followed with singles of their own to drive in three more runs before Kim Nesloney popped up to shortstop to end the top of the fifth inning.
East Carolina threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Lara Brickhouse knocked in Stacey Smith with a fielder's choice to second base. Johnson retired the next batter to hold the Pirates, 5-2.
The Cougars answered with a five-run seventh inning. King reached on an error by second baseman Kristen Johnson. Glowacz followed with a two-run homerun blast (13th), Ferreris reached on a blooper single to right and advanced as Jenilee Skender reached on an error by first baseman Kate Manuse.
With two outs Keith capped the inning with a three run shot (4th) over the left field wall to extend the Cougars' lead, 10-2.
Jenny Johnson (11-7) picked up her 11th win as the Cougars ended their five-game error streak.
The Cougars will head face cross-town foe Texas Southern in a non-conference double-header Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
