HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team swept UAB in a Conference USA doubleheader Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium. The Cougars held the Lady Blazers to only three runs in both games, winning 4-3 and 10-0 to improve to 28-17 overall and 10-4 in C-USA.
Juniors Jamie Falco (11-7) and Jenny Johnson (9-6) each pitched complete games and picked up wins for the Cougars.
Both teams remained scoreless in game one until the top of the fourth inning. Starting UAB pitcher Kelli Thompson hit a three-run homer (her fourth of the year) to left center to give the Lady Blazers a 3-0 advantage. Falco retired the next two batters and Houston answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own.
Arelis Ferreris lead off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot over the left field wall and Michelle Keith and Michelle Whipple reached on consecutive errors by the UAB defense.
On the next play UAB shortstop Candice Hithe and left fielder Sara Christophel collided in the outfield on a Lindsay Durham hit, scoring Whipple. Both Lady Blazers left the game with injuries (knee and neck) and were transported to a local hospital for further medical examination. After a 35-minute delay, Houston ended the inning down one, 3-2.
Kristen Glowacz tied the game for Houston in the fifth with a homerun of her own (eighth) to left field. Keith gave the Cougars the game winner in the sixth, a lead-off homerun (third) off UAB's Kerri Foster.
The Lady Blazers came up short in the top of the seventh as Houston prevailed 4-3. Falco gave up six hits and struck out eight in seven innings of work to pick up her 11th win of the season.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick lead in Game Two, posting runs in the first and third innings. Kim Nesloney walked in the first and made her way to third base, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ferreris. Nesloney walked again in the third inning and scored as Glowacz hit a short homer over the center field wall (her second of the day) to give Houston a 3-0 advantage.
Jaci Gonzalez added another run for Houston in the fourth, knocking in Whipple (walked and moved to third on a Durham sacrifice bunt) with a single. The Cougars took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning and would end the game there.
Ferreris lead off the fifth with a single and was knocked in by Jeanie Davis, who hit her ninth home run of the year. Keith tripled to right center on the next pitch but was called out on Whipple's fielder's choice. Durham singled to advance Whipple to third, who scored on error by the catcher. With two outs, Glowacz homered to right center (third of the day,10th of the year) to knock in three more runs.
Glowacz's shot was enough to end the game at 10-0 per the NCAA softball eight-run after-five inning-rule.
Jenny Johnson stuck out five and allowed only two hits in five complete innings to improve her overall record to 9-6.
The Cougars return to C-USA play tomorrow when they wrap up the UAB series at 1 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
