HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team completed its Conference USA sweep of UAB with a 4-2 win over the Lady Blazers Sunday at the Cougar Softball Stadium. Sophomore third baseman Kristen Glowacz hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Houston (29-17, 11-4 C-USA) the victory.
Freshman Crystal Briscoe (8-4) struck out nine and allowed only two hits in her sixth complete game of the season for Houston.
Cliffanie Engram led off with a single to left center and made her way around the bases, eventually scoring on a Houston throwing error as UAB took a 1-0 lead. The Cougars retaliated in the bottom of the third inning when Jaci Gonzalez (reached on a fielder's choice) and Kim Nesloney (walked) were put in scoring position by a Glowacz lineout to left field. Jenilee Skender singled up the middle to score both runners and give Houston a 2-1 lead.
UAB's Kris Lara hit a solo homerun off Briscoe in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Houston was able to hold the Lady Blazers scoreless in the top of the seventh and went to the bottom of the inning at the top of the lineup.
Gonzalez lead off with a single to right field to put the winning run on base. With one out, Glowacz stepped to the plate and homered to left field to drive in two more runs and give Houston the win. The home run was her fourth of the weekend and 12th of the season.
Houston has won its last five games and is 11-4 in Conference USA (third).
The Cougars will travel to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina Friday in a C-USA doubleheader at 1 p.m.
