Golf Earns Third Place Finish in Hawaii

KONA, Hawaii - The University of Houston golf team wrapped up its most successful tournament of the 2002-03 season Friday with a third-place finish at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate at Kona, Hawaii.
The Cougars fired a team score of 287 during final-day competition Friday to finish with a score of 7-under-par 849 and tie with Oklahoma and Washington.
Senior John Wine enjoyed the best tournament of his collegiate career, tying for fourth at 6-under-par 208. After posting back-to-back career-best rounds of 70 earlier in the week, Wine fired even lower on Friday, signing for a 68 on his scorecard.
Freshman Zach Mowbray tied for 26th at even-par 214 and fellow first-year Cougar Kevin Newman tied for 41st at 216. Other Cougars competing were Brett Callas (t-48th, 217) and Simon Robinson (t-54th, 218).
UCLA captured the team title with a score of 836. Individually, TCU's Adam Meyer earned medallist honors with a score of 12-under-par 202. Nick Watney of Fresno State and Steve Conway of UCLA tied for second at 207.
The Cougars will take about two weeks off before returning to action March 3-4 at the Southwestern Intercollegiate.
