HOUSTON, Texas - After getting their first win in a month over Army 34-14, the University of Houston football team began preparations for this weekend's road contest at Louisville with a spirited practice Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars (6-4, 3-3 C-USA) take on the Cardinals at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.
After a two-hour practice the Cougars hit the weight room to round out the first practice of the week. Head coach Art Briles said the practice was good.
"It was pretty lively," he said. "We had a good time and we did some good things."
Louisville (7-3, 3-3 C-USA) is coming off a tough 37-7 home loss at the hands of Memphis. Briles said it will be important to be ready for a tough Louisville team.
"They are a very talented team with a lot of depth on both sides of the ball," Briles said. "They're well schooled, well schemed and well disciplined. They were a top-25-team two weeks ago so they're a team that has made great strides this season. It should be a good battle."
Getting the win at Army was big for Houston for more than one reason, it snapped a three game losing streak and it made them bowl eligible. Briles stressed the importance of building on the momentum from that win.
"With two games left, it really relieved a lot of external pressures from the football team," he said. "I think we need to keep showing steady improvement. We have two tough teams left and we're not assured of a bowl game yet. We need to win to make sure we get into a bowl game and to establish our program another step."
