HOUSTON, Texas - For the second time this season true freshman quarterback Kevin Kolb (Stephenville, Texas) was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honors this week with Memphis running back DeAngelo Williams. Kolb won the honor last month after his performance in the 42-35 win over Mississippi State.
Kolb continued his impressive rookie campaign with a record-breaking performance last time out in the 62-55 loss to #15 TCU at Robertson Stadium. Kolb passed for 434 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 144 yards and one score for 578 yards of total offense. His performance is the third-best in the nation behind two outstanding passing performances by Texas Tech's B.J. Symons. Kolb had a hand in 12 plays of at least 20 yards in the thrilling loss to the Horned Frogs, connecting on long passes to Brandon Middleton six times and Harrison Arceneaux and Vincent Marshall one apiece. He also had rushes of 32, 27, 26 and 22 yards, as well as a 14-yard score.
Kolb became just the fourth quarterback in the history of Division I-A football to rush for at least 100 yards and pass for over 400, joining Ole Miss' Archie Manning (104 rushing, 435 passing vs. Alabama in 1969), New Mexico's Ned James (118/406 vs. Wyoming in 1986) and Northwestern's Zak Kustok (111/421 vs. Bowling Green in 2001) in the record books. His total offense tied the Conference USA record set by Chris Redman against East Carolina in 1998, and his five touchdowns accounted for are third-best in C-USA history.
He hooked up with Middleton for 232 yards, which is third-best in league history, as well as Marshall for an additional 106 receiving yards. He became the first UH quarterback since Donald Douglas (103) vs. SMU on Oct. 19, 1991, to rush for over 100 yards. He was the first Cougar quarterback to top 400 yards passing in eight years (Chuck Clements had 401 vs. TCU on Oct. 7, 1995).
For the season Kolb has passed for 1,920 yards and 17 touchdowns with just three interceptions. He is completing 57.9 percent of his passes on 132 of 228 attempts. His passing efficiency is 150.61 which places him 15th in the nation and second in Conference USA. He has tacked on an additional 220 yards and three touchdowns rushing.
The Cougars are off this week before returning to action on Saturday, November 8, when they play host to Southern Miss for Homecoming. Kickoff is slated for 4 pm.
