After tying Southern Miss in double-overtime on Friday in the 2003 home finale, the University of Houston women's soccer team headed on the road and closed out regular season with a 2-1 loss to the Green Wave on Sunday (Oct. 26) afternoon at Westfeldt Facility in New Orleans.
Tulane wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, with sophomore Jessica Mendez registering her fifth goal of the season at the 2:54 mark. Freshman Rachel Thompson won the ball in the Houston half of the field and fed Melissa Wheeler, who in turn, sent a flick past a Houston defender to Mendez who proceeded to finished her one-on-one attempt with Cougar goalkeeper Erin Ferguson.
The Wave added their second goal in the 16th minute when Jackie Obert sent a long cross in from the right sideline to Kelley Smith on the left side of the penalty area. Houston goalie Erin Ferguson did well to cover the net and blocked Smith's first shot, but the ball bounced back to the Tulane junior and she slammed her follow-up attempt over a Houston defender and into the back of the net.
Houston pulled to witin a goal in the 67th minute. Following a free kick by Emily Allwardt, Nikki Hawkins took the ball and slid an opportunistic shot past Tulane goalie Megan Morey to make the score 2-1.
Houston had a 9-7 edge in shots, including a 5-2 margin in the second half. Ferguson registered three saves. Hawkins led the Cougars with three shots on the day, including her goal, while Nicole Aubuchon followed with two shots.
With the loss, the Cougars' season record rests at 3-13-2, including 1-8-1 in Conference USA.
