AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman Azul Almazan swept both diving events, and freshman Szintia Szanto recorded a Top Five time, but it would not be enough as the University of Houston swimming and diving program fell 127-83 to Texas at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars' results against Northern Arizona were not available late Friday night. While the Cougars were swimming against the Longhorns, NAU was scheduled to compete at its home facility in Flagstaff, Ariz., with the results being sent to Texas over the Internet.
The reigning Conference USA Diver of the Week, Almazan won her third and fourth consecutive events to open the 2003 season. She posted 261.40 points on the 1-meter springboard to win that event by nearly 10 points and added a mark of 281.93 points on the 3-meter board, nearly 20 points better than the second place finisher.
On the swimming side, Szanto recorded the team's lone first-place finish and did so in outstanding fashion. A native of Budapest, Hungary, Szanto posted a time of 2:06.52 in the 200-yard individual medley. That was more than two seconds faster than the second-place competitor and was the fourth fastest time in UH history.
Freshman diver Anna Kiess was equally impressive for the Cougars with a pair of Top Three finishes. The Berlin, Germany, native placed third on the 1-meter board with 239.70 points and was second in the 3-meter competition with 263.85 points.
Junior Kristin Bay placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.83, and senior Lucile Turpin finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:11.29.
The Cougars will now take a lengthy break from the competitive waters before returning to action at 3 p.m, Oct. 31, in Lexington, Ky., when they meet Conference USA rival Louisville and Kentucky. The team continues its road trip at 10 a.m., Nov. 1, when it meets UL and C-USA foe Cincinnati in Ohio.
