HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team will continue its campaign for a 21st consecutive winning season tomorrow against Baylor in Waco. The Cougars (8-4) will face the Bears (6-5) in one last non-conference match to wrap up a five-match road stand.
The Cougars are coming off of a win Sunday over Saint Mary's in Honolulu. Houston won in four sets 30-26, 22-30, 30-22 and 30-25. The win snapped a four-match losing streak that began September 10 at home against Lamar. The Cougars fell to No. 4 Stanford, Ohio and No. 2 Hawai'I in their following contests before the victory over the Gaels.
Houston is led by All-Conference USA Preseason Team selection Jenny Tanneberger. The senior middle hitter was at full strength in Honolulu after sustaining a September 10 shoulder injury. She racked up 15 kills (.324), 12 digs and six blocks against Saint Mary's. She was also named C-USA Player of the Week for the period ending September 8.
Senior setter Donna Sellen and outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek are the other top Cougar returnees. Sellen leads the team in assists (456) and has added 14 service aces this season. Karasek, who is second on the team in kills (149) and third in digs (99) and total blocks (23), was among the nation's best volleyball players named to the 2002 Campus USA Credit Union Invitational hosted by Florida on September 14.
Action will return to Hofheinz Pavilion as the Cougars begin Conference USA play against Tulane October 4 at 7:30 p.m.
