With 2-2 record heading into this weekend's bye-week, the University of Houston Cougar football team took the practice field behind the Athletics/Alumni Center on Wednesday (Sept. 25) afternoon to concentrate on the fundamentals and the basics.
"The big thing we're stressing this week with the open week is fundamentals," began third-year hed coach Dana Dimel. "We're trying to hit the fundamentals as much as we possibly can, offensively, defensively and on special teams.
"We're also just going to have three practices this week -- Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday -- to help the guys get their legs back under them a bit."
Part of the focus in these two weeks before taking the field in their next against TCU on Oct. 5 is incorporating quarterback Nick Eddy into the daily routine and offense. Following the season-ending injury (torn ACL) Barrick Nealy suffered in last week's contest at Texas, Eddy formally takes over the QB reigns to carry the Cougars the rest of the way.
"In this open week it's been good with him (Eddy) coming in and getting a chance to have this whole extra week, and essentially two full weeks, to get used to being back in charge," said Dimel. "I think he'll do a lot of good things. Now it's just a matter of keeping him as healthy as possible."
The Cougars head back on the road next weekend to continue their current season-long four-game road swing by traveling to Ft. Worth, Texas, to take on inner-state C-USA rival TCU on Oct. 5. The Cougars don't return home to Robertson Stadium until Oct. 19 when they host C-USA opponent Army.
