Pakhalina Earns Silver Medal at European Championships

BERLIN, Germany - Add another award to University of Houston diver Yulia Pakhalina's trophy case.
Teaming with Vera Ilyina, Pakhalina captured a silver medal in the 3-meter synchronized diving competition Sunday at the European Championships in Berlin, Germany.
She continues her stay at the Championships Thursday when she takes part in the 1-meter springboard preliminaries at 11 a.m. (Central, 7 p.m. Berlin time) with the finals slated for 6:05 a.m. Friday (Central, 2:05 p.m. Berlin).
Pakhalina and Ilyina posted a score of 308.76 to finish in second place. Germany's Ditte Kotzian and Conny Schmalfuss claimed the gold medal with a total of 312.00 points.
The Penza, Russia, native isn't the only Cougar working at the European Championships. Diving coach Jane Figueiredo is helping coach the Russian divers, while new head swimming and diving coach Mark Taylor is working with the Danish team before assuming his duties in Houston in mid-August.
Nearly 800 competitiors from 38 nations are scheduled to compete at the Championships. Pakhalina is one of 47 female divers, who will be competing in 10 events.
