ARDMORE, Okla. - If the University of Houston golf team is using this week's tournament as a tune-up before the NCAA postseason, head coach Mike Dirks must feel good about his team's chance to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Four Cougars placed among the top 20 individual leaders as Houston fired a team score of 569 on Saturday to stand in second place after day one of The Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla. UH was only four strokes behind leader Oklahoma State and three strokes ahead of third-place Texas, on the 6,744-yard, par-70 course at Dornick Hills Country Club.
Following The Maxwell, the Cougars head to Little Rock, Ark., to compete at the NCAA Central Regional on May 16-18. It marked the sixth straight season that UH has advanced to the NCAA postseason as a team.
After shooting a 72 during the first 18 holes, Brett Callas rebounded to shoot 2-under-par 68 and tie for third place at 140. Brad McIntosh remained steady during the first and second rounds, shooting 70-71 to place seventh at 1-over-par 141.
Simon Robinson, an All-C-USA and C-USA All-Tournament Team honoree, tied for 11th at 3-over-par 143 and Scott Ferguson rounded out the Cougar leaders in the top 20 with a score of 145 to tie for 17th.
Chris Cureton stood in a tie for 58th place with a score of 156.
Oklahoma and Tulsa rounded out the top five teams in the tournament, which features 12 of the nation's finest collegiate golf squads.
Individually, Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State and Cody Freeman were tied for top honors after the second round at 2-under-par 138, while Texas Tech's Kyle Willmann was third at 139.
