HOUSTON, Texas - Although it improved on its first round score, the University of Houston golf team remained in fifth place Tuesday after the second day of the Conference USA Championships.
The Cougars, who posted a team score of 294 in the first round, rebounded to fire a mark of 290 on the scoreboard on the 6,795-yard, par-72 course at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla. However, the five-time defending champion Cougars could get no closer to team leader TCU, which shot a 283 during the second 18 holes and maintained a five-stroke lead over second-place UAB.
Junior Simon Robinson posted a 3-under-par 69 during the second round to become the first Cougar to shoot a sub-par round at the league's annual postseason event and was tied for sixth at 1-under-par 143.
Brett Callas was in a tie for 22nd place at 147, while John Wine stood in a tie for 34th place at 149. Scott Ferguson tied for 41st place with a score of 150, while Brad McIntosh, the 2001 C-USA Tournament individual champion, improved seven strokes from Monday's opening round but still stood in 45th place at 151.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Individually, Bret Guetz of TCU remained atop the leaderboard at 10-under-par 134, two strokes ahead of Evan Frederick of Saint Louis. Ryan Thomas of UAB was third at 138 with Jason Harris of East Carolina finishing fourth at 140.
On the team leaderboard, Southern Mississippi, South Florida and the Cougars rounded out the top five.
