Pakhalina Wins 36th Straight at NCAA Zone D Diving Qualifier

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Death and taxes are two certainties in life. University of Houston diver Yulia Pakhalina winning a collegiate meet is ready to join that group soon.
Pakhalina continued her dominance Saturday as the nation's finest collegiate diver with another first-place finish in the 3-meter springboard at the NCAA Zone D Diving Qualifier at the Arkansas Natatorium. With 655.75 points, the Penza, Russia, native was more than 150 points better than the second-place finisher.
Her victory, the 35th consecutive of her collegiate career, assured Pakhalina a berth in next week's NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. A year ago, Pakhalina captured the NCAA national championships on both the 1- and 3-meter springboards.
Cougar teammate Veronica Smith placed 15th in the competition with a score of 398.30.
