FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Houston sophomore diver Yulia Pakhalina moved one step closer Friday to defending her NCAA national championships with another victory at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships.
Pakhalina, who has now won 34 consecutive NCAA diving events in her brief UH career, recorded 336.00 points on the 1-meter springboard during first-day action at the Arkansas Natatorium. The Penza, Russia, native was the only diver to post more than 300 points in the event.
Cougar teammate Veronica Smith finished 14th in the qualifier with a score of 218.00.
With her first-place finish, Pakhalina earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Diving Championships in Austin, Texas, on March 21-23. She will look to qualify on the 3-meter springboard when that competition starts at 2 p.m. Saturday.
