HOUSTON, Texas - For the second consecutive season the University of Houston football team will have the luxury of playing six of its games at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium, as the complete 2002 schedule was released today by Conference USA.
Even more impressive is that the Cougars will have to travel out of the state of Texas only three times in their 12-game slate, making conference trips to UAB, Memphis and Cincinnati. The Cougars are entitled to schedule 12 games in 2002 and 2003, as per NCAA regulations recently adopted.
UH Director of Athletics Dave Maggard likes what he sees for the Cougars in 2002.
"The 2002 football schedule appears to be very positive for the Cougars," commented Maggard. "We essentially begin the season with three home games and finish the season with two home games.
"The schedule also allows for the possibility of two wild card television games during the season. We have no complaints as we look forward to the season."
The Cougars kick off the 2002 campaign on August 31 with the annual Bayou Bucket clash with cross-town rival Rice at Rice Stadium. UH then returns to the friendly confines of O'Quinn Field for back-to-back contests when they play host to C-USA rival Tulane on September 7 and Louisiana-Lafayette on September 14.
The Rice game will be the first August game for the Cougars since facing Alabama in Birmingham on August 30, 1997, and the league clash with the Green Wave is the earliest conference game for the Cougars since facing Texas Tech on September 13, 1990, when both were members of the Southwest Conference.
The September 21st contest at the University of Texas begins a stretch of three straight road games and four of five away from Houston over a seven-week span. Included in the seven-week stretch are two open weeks on September 28 and October 26, as well as conference road games at TCU (October 5), UAB (October 12) and Memphis (November 2). The lone home game during that span is an October 19 clash with Army.
The Cougars close out the month of November with three home games and one road contest. After a one-year scheduling hiatus the Cougars face East Carolina on November 9, before heading to Cincinnati for the final road game of the year on November 16. UH closes with a non-conference game versus South Florida on November 23, and then the season finale with the defending conference champions, Louisville, on November 30.
Southern Miss is the only Conference USA team the Cougars will not face this season. Last year UH did not play either Tulane or East Carolina.
