Pakhalina Wins Again at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - University of Houston diver Yulia Pakhalina continued her dominance Friday night with another dazzling performance at the Texas Invitational.
The Penza, Russia, native recorded 323.15 points to win the 1-meter event at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. It was her 48th win in her last 50 collegiate diving events.
Pakhalina was the only diver to score more than 300 points in the event and earned a berth in the finals with a score of 313.70 points earlier in the day. She finished the event more than 30 points ahead of second-place finisher Trisha Tumlinson of Arizona State.
After day two of the three-day event, the Cougars stood in ninth place with 67 points. Host Texas continued to lead the team competition with 598 points with USC, Arizona, Wisconsin, Arizona State, UC Santa Barbara, Rice and Nebraska rounding out the top eight leaders.
Competition concludes at 10 a.m. Saturday with six events, including the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 1,650-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay. The finals start at 6 p.m. and admission is free to all sessions.
The Cougars join an impressive field at the meet, including Arizona, Arizona State, Hawaii, Nebraska, Northwestern, Rice, TCU, UC Santa Barbara, USC, Wisconsin, and host Texas.
Other UH competitors in action Friday were Lucile Turpin (400-yard individual medley), Tatjana Banjeglav (100-yard breaststroke), Laura Starr (100-yard breaststroke), Jessica Blake (100-yard backstroke), Kristin Bay (100-yard backstroke) and Falon Hopkins (100-yard backstroke).
