HOUSTON - Freshmen Stacey Williams and Azul Almazan were honored Tuesday as the Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week.
Both Williams and Almazan helped lead the Cougars to a convincing 159-130 win over Louisiana-Monroe last weekend at the UH Natatorium.
Williams, a native of Perth, Australia, earned first-place finishes in four events and set two new UH season events in the win over the Indians. She won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.73, nearly six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, and captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 53.52.
She swam the third leg of the Cougars' victorious 400-yard medley relay and was the opening leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which posted a season-best time of 1:39.78. In addition, her opening split of 24.98 in the freestyle relay was a new personal best for her in the 50-yard freestyle.
Almazan was the top diver for the Cougars against ULM. She finished first on the 3-meter board with a score of 282.83 points, nearly 40 points ahead of the second-place finisher. She capped the day with first-place honors on the 1-meter board with a score of 271.58 points.
It marked the second time in league history that the Cougars swept Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors in one week. A year ago, Stacey Ebeling and three-time NCAA national champion Yulia Pakhalina won the first ever Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards, respectively.
Williams and Almazan and the entire Cougar program return to action on Dec. 5-7 when they compete at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas. UH returns to the friendly confines of the UH Natatorium for the home finale with an NCAA dual meet against LSU at 4 p.m., Jan. 17.
