Houston, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team will continue its campaign for a 21st consecutive winning season tomorrow against conference rival Southern Miss at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Cougars (9-4, 0-0 C-USA) will face the Golden Eagles (9-7, 1-0 C-USA) at 7:30 tomorrow after having tonight's match against Tulane postponed due to threats of Hurricane Lili.
The Cougars had a week off following a 3-1 win Sept. 26 over Baylor in Waco. The win was the second in a row for Houston after a four-match losing streak beginning Sept. 10 with Lamar and ending Sept. 20 with No. 2 Hawai'i.
Houston is led by All-Conference USA Preseason Team selection Jenny Tanneberger. The senior middle hitter tallied 15 kills, seven digs and four blocks Sept. 26 against Baylor. Tanneberger leads the squad in kills (198), hitting (.326) and blocks (58) in 13 matches this season. She was also named C-USA Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 8.
Senior setter Donna Sellen and outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek are the other Cougar leaders. Sellen leads the team in assists (506) and has added 16 service aces this season. Karasek, who is second on the team in kills (163) and third in digs (108), was among the nation's best volleyball players named to the 2002 Campus USA Credit Union Invitational hosted by Florida on Sept. 14.
Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion Oct. 17 as Houston battles cross-town rival Rice at 7:30 p.m. The Tulane match cancelled for tonight has been rescheduled for Nov. 12 (Senior Night) at 7:30 p.m. at Hofheinz.
