Sophomore Nikki Hawkins scored the lone goal of the match in the 69th minute, taking a pass from freshman Beth Outlaw and slipping it past Bobcat goalie Kristen Tutt to the right side of the net and let the defense do the rest as the University of Houston women's soccer team shutout Southwest Texas State by a final of 1-0 on Wednesday (Oct. 2) night at Robertson Stadium.
The shutout was the Cougars' second of the year, as well as the second in their last three games, and the second for freshman goalie Erin Ferguson, who recorded four saves in the match. Houston shutout DePaul by the same score last Friday, Sept. 27.
The game was a defensive battle for both teams as both failed to score in the first half.
After Houston took the lead, the defense turned it up a notch to hold off the Bobcats while keeping the ball on offense and out-shot the opponent ten-to-four.
Southwest Texas threatened late in the game, but failed to capitalize on a penalty kick with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
The win extends Houston's current win streak to eight straight dating back to last season, which is the second-longest home winning streak in school history behind the 11-game home streak from 1998-99.
Houston's season record now rests at 5-3-2. The Cougars head back on the road this weekend and travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cedar City, Utah, to take on the UNLV Rebels (Oct. 5) and the Southern Utah thunderbirds (Oct. 7). They return home to Robertson Stadium and host C-USA rival UAB on Friday, Oct. 11, with kick-off slated for 7:00p.m.
