HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team will continue its campaign for a 21st consecutive winning season this weekend against conference rivals Memphis and Saint Louis.
The Cougars (10-4, 1-0 C-USA) will face the Tigers (13-6, 0-1) tomorrow at Roane Fieldhouse and the Billikens (12-6, 2-0) Saturday at the Bauman-Eberhardt Center. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
The Cougars opened Conference USA competition Oct. 5 with a 3-0 victory over Southern Miss at home. The win was the third in a row for Houston and its first victory at home since Nov. 16, 2001. Houston lost to Lamar in its Sept. 10 home opener and had the Oct. 4 match against Tulane cancelled because of Hurricane Lili threats.
Houston is led by All-Conference USA Preseason Team selection Jenny Tanneberger. The 6-0 senior middle hitter leads the squad in kills (214), hitting (.332) and blocks (62) in 14 matches this season. She was also named C-USA Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 8.
Senior setter Donna Sellen and outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek are the other Cougar leaders. Sellen leads the team in assists (559) and has added 16 service aces this season. Karasek, who is second on the team in kills (196) and third in digs (120), set a personal-best and conference season record last week when she racked up 33 kills in three games against Southern Miss.
Action returns to Hofheinz Pavilion Oct. 17 as Houston battles cross-town rival Rice at 7:30 p.m.
