MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Fresh off a thrilling 3-2 win over Tulane to open its Conference USA season, the University of Houston women's volleyball team looks to carry some of that momentum on the road as it faces Memphis in a 2 p.m. contest Sunday.
With the victory over the Green Wave, the Cougars (4-5, 1-0) won their conference opener for the eighth consecutive season.
UH used an impressive rally midway through the fifth and final game to take the match over the Green Wave. Trailing 8-6, the Cougars scored eight of the game's next nine points to take control of the match.
Jennifer Wittenburg, UH's lone selection to the Conference USA All-Preseason Team, led the way with 24 kills and added 13 digs for the 18th double-double of her Cougar career. Jane Anne Karasek also posted 19 kills, while Gabi Carbone added a match-best 18 digs.
If history is any indication, the Cougars should do well in Sunday's match. UH has posted an all-time mark of 15-2 against Memphis and has won five straight matches and 15 of its last 16 matches over the Tigers.
A year ago, UH cruised to a pair of 3-0 victories against Memphis.
Memphis (10-0, 1-0 C-USA) comes into the match as one of only two undefeated teams in the league. The Tigers have won 10 straight matches to open their season but have been pushed recently, playing at least four games in three of their last four matches.
In their most recent match, the Tigers claimed a 3-1 road victory at UAB. Ginger Garrett led four players in double digits wi th 12 kills and has posted a team-best 137 kills this season.
