Stillwater, Okla. -- Next stop Durham, North Carolina. For the fifth-straight year the University of Houston golf team has successfully passed the NCAA Central Regional qualifying tournament to advance to the next level - the NCAA Championships where the Cougars will compete for an unprecedented 17th national championship in the sport.
In Saturday's final round (May 19) at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., Houston made a move up from 12th into a tie for ninth place overall among a field of 27 teams. The top ten finish in the qualifier, which was by a single stroke over both Ohio State and Tulsa and just two shots ahead of state rival Texas A&M, secured Houston's spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament May 30 through June 2 in Durham, N.C.
Houston posted a seven-over par total of 295 in Saturday's final round for a 54-total of 892 strokes (28-over par).
The Cougars tied for ninth with SMU and both were a full nine shots behind tournament co-champions Kent State, Oklahoma and Purdue (883, +19).
UH and the Mustangs are the only two schools from the state of Texas to qualify for the 2001 NCAA Championships.
The Cougars were paced in the final round by true freshman Brad McIntosh, who came back and fired two-under par 70 after an uncharacteristic 81 on Friday.
The Conference USA champion and league Freshman of the Year tied for 40th in the final standings with a 223 (+7).
Overall Houston was led by the tandem of senior Andy Sanders and sophomore Simon Robinson who both tied for 20th in the 141-player field with identical scores of four-over par 220. Both were eight shots back in the final individual standings of regional champion John Klauk of Texas (212, -4) Team and UH individual results are as follows...
