HOUSTON, Texas - The way that University of Houston diver Yulia Pakhalina is performing right now, Conference USA officials may just as well name an award after her.
For the third time this season, Pakhalina was honored as the C-USA Diver of the Week after her performances at the Arkansas Invitational last weekend. The Moscow, Russia, native helped lead the Cougars to a third-place team finish after winning both the one- and three-meter springboard events.
Pakhalina, the 2001 NCAA national champion in both diving events, captured first place in the one-meter event with a score of 310.30 points and followed that with a mark of 571.65 points in the three-meter competition. She was the only diver to score more than 300 points and 500 points in the two events, respectively.
She has now captured first-place finishes in 12 consecutive events at six meets to open the season and holds the league's top scores in each event.
Pakhalina's award was also the fourth time that a Cougar diver received the honor this year.
After competing at Arkansas for the second time this year, Pakhalina and her Cougar teammates will take some time off and won't hit the water again until Jan. 19 when they play host to crosstown rival Rice in a 1 p.m. dual meet, Jan. 19 at the UH Natatorium.
