HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston swimming and diving team starts a busy weekend when it meets Arkansas in a 7 p.m dual meet Friday at the Arkansas Natatorium.
Following that meet, the Cougars continue north to face Kansas and Southwest Missouri State in competition Saturday from Springfield, Mo.
The Cougars (2-2) come into the meet on the heels of a dominating 197-90 win at Louisiana-Monroe last weekend, their second straight dual meet victory of the young season.
In that meet, sophomore Veronica Smith captured first place on the three-meter springboard and second place on the one-meter board. The Houston native posted a score of 224.33 to win the three-meter event by 15.00 points and finished second in the one-meter competition, only 0.06 points out of first place.
For her impressive performances, Smith was honored as the Conference USA Diver of the Week on Wednesday, the second consecutive honor for a Cougar diver. On Oct. 23, sophomore and two-time national champion Yulia Pakhalina collected the first-ever award for a UH diver.
On the swimming side, junior Falon Hopkins led all Cougars by taking first place in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 25.00 in the 50 freestyle established a new Cougar season best.
Arkansas comes into the meet with an 0-1 record in dual meets but recently finished first in a meet featuring all four teams from the SEC West Division. The Razorbacks collected 630 points in the meet to finish 14 points ahead of Auburn and nearly 100 points better than third-place LSU.
