UH VOLLEYBALL THIS WEEK
Houston receives a mini-break in its schedule as it plays only one match this week against Conference USA rival TCU on Saturday at Fort Worth, Texas. The TCU match will be the only action UH sees during a 12-day span.
The Cougars come into the contest on a two-match winning streak after sweeping league rival Saint Louis and Memphis in back-to-back 3-0 victories last weekend. With those wins, UH pulled into fifth place in the league standings.
This will be only the second time in school history that Houston has faced TCU, and it will be the first showdown on the Horned Frogs' home court.
LAST TIME OUT
A day after winning its first three-game match of the season, the Cougars continued their recent, torrid play with another 3-0 sweeping of Conference USA rival Memphis on Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars defeated the Tigers for the second time this season and the seventh consecutive time in the all-time series. After setting a new season- best attack percentage Saturday against Saint Louis, the Cougars blasted away to a .259 hitting percentage while holding the Tigers to only a .086 percentage.
Jennifer Wittenburg led all players with 16 kills, while Jane Anne Karasek added 10 kills with only one error and a match-best 13 digs for the sixth double-double of her collegiate career.
WITTENBURG RACKING 'EM UP
Sixth-year senior Jennifer Wittenburg continues to add to her impres- sive career total and rise higher in the Cougar record books. In 15 matches this season, she has registered 20 or more kills nine times and 25 or more kills six times.
She leads the team with 334 kills this season -- an average of 5.57 per game -- and 210 digs, a 3.50 per game average and will surpass the 1,100- kill mark in her Cougar career with six kills against TCU this weekend. The Houston native recently posted the 1,000th kill of her UH career with a 31-kill effort at Memphis on Sept. 23 and now needs only 44 more kills to move into the top 10 in school career history in that category.
AWARD WINNERS
Jennifer Wittenburg added to her list of accolades when she was named Conference USA Player of the Week for Sept. 24.
In three matches, Wittenburg blasted 86 kills while tallying 35 digs to help lead the Cougars to a pair of 3-2 victories to open their Conference USA season. Included in those stats two 31-kill performances agaist nationally- ranked Texas and league rival Memphis.
This is the third time she has collected the league's award during her Houston career.
Earlier this year, Wittenburg was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Kansas State Wildcat Classic.
