HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston men's golf team has played in only one fall tournament so far this season, but that doesn't mean that the Cougars haven't impressed people yet.
The Cougars ranked No. 19 in the Golf Coaches Association of America preseason poll released late last week after receiving 221 points.
Florida received the top ranking in the poll with 892 points, followed by Arizona (826), Georgia (773), Oklahoma State (745) and Georgia Tech (742). Wake Forest, Texas, Arizona State, Clemson and Oklahoma rounded out the top 10.
Houston teed off its 2001-02 season three weeks ago with a 14th-place finish at The Ridges Intercollegiate. After taking a length break from tournament play, the Cougars return to action on Oct. 8-9 when they compete at the Red River Classic in Austin, Texas.
In their last tournament, junior Simon Robinson and sophomore Scott Ferguson each fired scores of 219 to tie for 31st place.
GCAA members are eligible to rank the top 25 teams in their respective divisions with teams receiving points on a reverse order basis.
