Matthew McDonald returned to the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program as the team’s video coordinator in June 2022.
In his role, McDonald works closely with Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and the coaching staff on opponents’ scouting reports and game preparations and assists in other areas of the program.
McDonald is no stranger to Sampson and the Houston Men’s Basketball program. He first joined the team as a student manager from 2017 to 2019 before serving as the Cougars’ assistant video coordinator from 2019 to 2021.
He as worked on the coaching staff of The Basketball Tournaments’ Forever Coogs team for each of the last two seasons, including a stint as head coach of the 2025 squad. His work helped lead that team to the 2024 finals.
McDonald served as the video coordinator at Lamar during the 2021-22 season when he worked for former Houston Head Coach and Assistant Coach Alvin Brooks and Houston letterman and Lamar Assistant Coach Mikhail McLean.
In addition to his professional experience at the collegiate level, McDonald also has assisted Team USA Basketball and worked with Aaron Miller Elite Bball Training.
McDonald received his bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Houston in 2019.
